As well as long-term care, Virginia Lodge Care Home offers short-term care with a dedicated respite room.
We accept private clients, and those through local authorities. Our fees are in-line with Cumbria County Council, meaning if you pay for your own care you don't pay more.
The home is of a single storey construction. The home has two large, communal lounges, a quieter lounge; the Sun Lounge, and two dining rooms.
The home has five bathrooms that accommodate residents with varying needs, i.e. bath with bath hoist, walk-in shower.
Our laundry is extensively equipped, and all laundry and linen is washed and ironed onsite. We have three dedicated cleaners to keep the home clean, safe, and tidy, and two dedicated laundry assistants to take care of all the laundry.
The home is of a single storey construction, and bedrooms are situated off four main corridors that are wide enough for wheelchair users.
All bedrooms are for single use, but there’s two bedrooms that may be shared. All rooms have washing facilities and 11 rooms are en-suite.
Although we're registered with CQC for up to 32 residents, being a well established business means we don't have the same financial demands. We run at a much lower occupancy so that there is time in the day for every single one of our residents.
We cater for people with a range of needs including old age, dementia, learning disabilities, immobility, and sensory impairment. This means you are likely to meet other people who may have the same difficulties as you – it can be good to feel like you have things in common with the people you are living with.
Although we all start out as strangers we hope you may meet people who you come to consider as friends. Or you may even meet people that you already know – we are a small community after all, with the majority of our residents coming from Longtown and just over the border.
All our food is cooked onsite, with local ingredients from local suppliers, by our dedicated kitchen team, comprising of a kitchen manager, three cooks, and two kitchen assistants. They make delicious home-style traditional meals, with daily baking. The kitchen is extensively equipped in accordance with the requirements of The Food Standards Act and is inspected annually by an environmental health officer. Our kitchen team are aware of the importance of ensuring a safe, clean, and hygienic kitchen. We've had our five-star rating in place for over 10 years so far meaning we also get Elite Status.
We cater for a range of diets; from vegetarian, coeliac, to soft or liquidised diet plans, we cater to you.
Our mealtimes are a big deal - whether you'd prefer to eat in one of the dining rooms, the lounges (if you’d prefer to keep an eye on the TV whilst eating we can bring a table to your armchair), or your bedroom - we aim to ensure a peaceful, focused environment. To help ensure this we have protected mealtimes in place. Meaning there'll be minimal disruptions, with carers who can focus on supporting every person to maintain a good diet.
Breakfast is served between 7am – 10am, though if you are up a little late the cooks can easily cater to you.
Breakfast typically consists of porridge, cereals, toast, and cooked meals. Everyone is given the choice each day, and we really encourage people to eat a hearty breakfast and get a good start to the day.
Between 10am – 11am we bring round the hot drinks trolley, so residents can relax after breakfast with a brew and whatever indulgence the cooks have been busy baking – scones, rockbuns, banana bread, etc.
Dinner is served between 11.45am – 1.30pm. This is when we have our main meal of the day (so that we are all full of energy for the afternoon’s activities!), have a look at the sample menu for an idea on what to expect. If nothing takes your fancy you can have whatever you like (providing we have the ingredients in, if not, you may have to give us a day or two notice!)
The brew trolley comes back around in the afternoon, between 2pm and 3pm. Enjoy a hot or cold drink, some fresh fruit, chocolate, or biscuits.
Tea is served between 3.45pm – 5.30pm. It’s a light meal (though there are three courses for you to fill up on!), there’s always homemade soup and sandwiches, a light dessert, and cake. Have a look at the sample menu.
Supper is served from 6pm until the last resident goes to bed. You can enjoy a hot or cold drink, biscuits, cake, toast, or sandwiches. Ideal if you only had a light meal at tea.
(Don't worry if you're inclined to enjoy a midnight snack - all our carers are able to fix you up something you fancy)
We like to make sure that we have something to do every day to keep our minds and hands busy! There could be dominoes, dancing, walks, crafting…
Our wellbeing and activities team provides diverse and interesting activities for residents’ participation, from group, to single, to one-to-one. And, if you already have a hobby we’ll do our best to support you to continue your interests.
Easter, summer, Halloween, and Christmas see annual themed parties and events. Musical acts and theatre groups regularly visit and perform.
Various trips are also organised away from ‘the Lodge’. Afternoon tea at the local garden centre, or shopping at the supermarket are popular activities to undertake. Information about upcoming activities and events can be found on notice boards around the home.
